Causative Agent(s)

Avian neoplastic disease characterized by marked thickening of the long bones. Seen with infection by avian leucosis virus.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Long bones of limbs are most affected (first the tarsus and tarsometatarsus). Uniform or irregular thickening of the diaphyseal or metaphyseal regions (bilaterally symmetrical). Regions are warm in active cases. Advanced disease gives appearance of “boot-like” shanks. Chickens are usually stunted and pale and walk with a stilted gait or limp.

Diagnostic Considerations

History supported by physical examination of affected birds is highly suggestive. Radiographic evaluation and biochemical assay for serum calcium can confirm the disease and reveal calcium deficiency.

Management and Treatment

No practical measures have been found for treatment.
