This is also a reportable disease caused by a Retrovirus called Equine infectious Anaemia virus.

 

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Transmission is by blood sucking insects like mosquitoes.

Clinical signs exhibited include fever, anaemia, weakness, swollen lower abdomen and hind limbs, sudden death.

 

Diagnostic Considerations

Clinical signs of swollen lower hind limbs can be tentative. Coggins (Agar Immunodiffusion) Test, ELISA, RT-PCR are definitive.

 

Management and Treatment

Insect control.

Routine tests every six months especially in breeding horses.

Affected horses should be quarantined for life or be euthanized to prevent spread because survivors are carriers for life. This pose transmission risk to other horses.
