Causative Agent(s)

This is also a reportable disease of horses caused by an Orthomyxovirus A/equine-2 (Equine influenza virus).

 

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Clinical signs include high fever, serous nasal discharge, submandibular lymphadenopathy, dry harsh non-productive cough, anorexia, weakness.

Diagnostic Considerations

Diagnosis   is   based    on   clinical   signs    tentatively.   Definitive   diagnosis   is   based on haemagglutination Inhibition Test (HIT) and viral isolation from nasopharyngeal swabs.

 

Management and Treatment

Proper rest of the animal for 1-3 weeks with supportive care. NASIDs are recommended in case of high fever.

Antibiotic be given when fever exceed 3-4 days.

Prevention is by proper hygienic management and vaccination.
