Causative Agent(s)

AdenovirusAcute disease of young chickens associated with anemia and hemorrhagic disorders. Usually causes minimal hepatic disease, but more severe with concomitant infectious bursal disease (IBD) or chicken anemia virus.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Transmission is both horizontal and vertical.

Clinical signs include sudden mortality (low) usually seen with chickens < 6 weeks old. Crouched position with ruffled feathers.

Diagnostic Consideration

Can isolate virus from liver lesions. Histopathology shows microscopically solitary prominent basophilic inclusion bodies in hepatocyte nuclei.

Management and Treatment

Nursing care. Antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Sulphonamides are contraindicated if evidence of hematologic disease or immunosuppression is seen. Both live and inactivated vaccines are available.
