Causative Agent(s)

Acute, highly contagious disease of ducks, geese, and swans. Caused by Herpesvirus, it is also called “duck viral enteritis” It is transmitted by direct contact or water (oral route mostly). Recovered birds may remain carriers.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Sudden high and persistent mortality is often the first sign of disease. Photophobia, inappetence, extreme thirst, droopiness, ataxia, nasal discharge (bloody), and watery/bloody diarrhoea are seen. Affected ducks are often unable to stand. Ducklings may show dehydration and weight loss, with blue beaks and blood-stained vents. Adult males may show post-mortem penile         prolapse.                     Mortality            usually                     higher                in                     adults.

Diagnostic Consideration Virus isolation and identification. Neutralization with specific antiserum.

Management and Treatment

No treatment. Avoid contact with wild birds. Vaccine available for domestic ducks.
