CHICKEN ANEMIA

exp date isn't null, but text field is

Causative Agent(s)

Caused by Cirvoviridae, DNA virus, also called "blue wing disease" or "haemorrhagic aplastic anaemia syndrome". It is transmission by direct contact, fomites, or egg transmission (vertical). Age resistance to disease (but not infection) begins at 1 week and is complete by 2 weeks. Older  birds  can  still  get  disease  if  co-infected  with  immunosuppressive  agents.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Chicks infected while in the egg are anorectic, lethargic, and pale. PCV is low (<27), and blood smears can show a pancytopenia. Death can occur. Gangrenous dermatitis (“blue wing”). Anaemia  results  from  destruction  of  hemocytoblasts  in  the  bone  marrow.

Diagnostic Considerations

Detection of virus antigen or DNA in thymus, bone marrow, or liver. Commercial ELISA available to detect antibodies.

Management and Treatment:

None. Can treat secondary bacterial infection with antibiotics.
