Causative Agent(s)

Adenovirus infection especially important to commercial egg producers. Three types: Classic – Due to contamination of a vaccine for Marek’s disease (grown in duck embryo fibroblasts). Transmitted vertically through the egg. Endemic – Seen in commercial egg layers. Spread horizontally by contaminated egg collection trays. Sporadic – Due to contact with wildlife or contaminated water.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Production of soft-shelled and shell-less eggs in apparently healthy birds. First sign is loss of colour in pigmented eggs.

Diagnostic Considerations

Clinical Signs, virus isolation. HI or ELISA for serology.

Management and Treatment

Sanitation, separate from wildlife. Inactivated vaccine available (can be combined with Newcastle vaccine or others).
