Mycoplasma meleagridis

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Mycoplasma meleagridis primarily causes an egg-transmitted infection in turkeys that leads to air sacculitis in the offspring. It does not affect chickens, and control programs have successfully eliminated it from commercial turkey flocks in many countries.

Clinical signs include reduced hatchability of eggs and poor poult growth rates.

Diagnostic Consideration

Serology, culture, or Polymerase Chain Reaction.

Management and Treatment

A combination of lincomycin and spectinomycin administered at 0.5g/litre of water for 5 days or tiamulin at a concentration of 0.025% in the drinking water for 3 days.
