Causative Agent(s)

Caused by protozoa, Cryptosporidium baileyi (Apicomplexa) Infection is acquired by inhalation of oocysts from the environment.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Coughing  and  gasping.  Signs  can  last  several  weeks,  and  death  may  occur.

Diagnostic Consideration

Identify oocysts in faeces or respiratory secretions.

Management and Treatment

None of the known anticoccidial drugs is effective against Cryptosporidium spp. Unlike

Cryptosporidium spp of other mammals, the avian species are not infectious to humans.

Control rely on isolation of infected birds and sanitation.
