Causative Agent(s)

Escherichia coli is the causative agent (Gram negative rod). Organism is normally present in poultry gastrointestinal tract and in the environment, but infection usually requires other predisposing factors.

Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology

Non-specific, and vary with age and other factors. Young birds may die of acute septicaemia. Older birds show subacute airsacculitis and pericarditis. Enteric infection in turkeys and respiratory infection in chickens.

Diagnostic Consideration

Isolation of a pure culture of E. coli from heart blood, liver or visceral lesions.

Management and Treatment

Control predisposing infections or environmental factors. Antibiotics as indicated by susceptibility data. Commercial bacterins can provide some protection.

Chlortetracycline 200-400g/ton of feed continuously for 7-14 days, Neomycin/Oxytetracycline 400g/ton of feed continuously for 7-14 days, Amoxycillin trihydrate (20-50%) powder, 200g per 600ml drinking water for 3-5 days, Erythromycin 25mg/kg of drinking water continuously for 5 days in pullets up to 16 weeks of age, Enrofloxacin at 12.5mg/kg PO for 3-5 days in chickens and turkeys.
