CRYPTOSPORIDIOSIS
exp date isn't null, but text field is
Causative Agent(s):
Cryptosporidium spp. (C. parvum, C. andersoni, C. bovis, and C. ryanae)
Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology
The disease presents as mild to severe diarrhoea, lethargy, and poor growth rates in young ruminants. Cryptosporidiosis is a highly prevalent gastrointestinal parasitic disease that infects a wide range of animals, including humans, throughout the world. The disease is of importance in neonatal ruminants.
Diagnostic Considerations
Identification of Cryptosporidium oocyst from faecal sample using sedimentation technique and modified Ziehl Neelsen stain method.
Management and Treatment
There is no effective or approved treatment for cryptosporidiosis, however many cases recover on their own.
- Paromomycin sulphate (100 mg/kg/day, PO, for 11 days from the second day of age) proved successful in preventing natural disease in a controlled clinical field trial in goat kids. Nitazoxanide, a drug licensed only for cryptosporidiosis in humans, has been shown to reduce disease severity in calves.
- Fluid and electrolyte replacement therapy is given to counteract and prevent further dehydration and electrolytes loss.
- Supportive therapy with antidiarrhoeal
