Clinical Presentation and Epidemiology
The disease occurs worldwide and mortality among affected sows is low.
The faecal microflora is a source of infection for this extra intestinal coliform infections such as mastitis.
In CM, the initial signs are usually seen a few days after farrowing.
The clinical signs usually observed are pyrexia, anorexia, listlessness, weakness, loss of interest in the piglets, recumbency, comatose and death.
Diagnostic Considerations
Blood and milk are cultured on blood agar and MacConkey agar to isolate the bacteria
Management and Treatment
Treatment should start before signs of dysgalactia. Sensitivity testing is of little value in individual cases.
Antimicrobials demonstrating some effectiveness include:
Oxytetracycline LA, 20mg/kg single dose I.M. Gentamicin, 6mg/kg b.w., q24h 5 days I.M. Enrofloxacin, 5mg/kg b.w., q24h 5days I.M.
